YOU'RE NOT BLACK!
Three words that are always ultimately spoken to me when someone feels comfortable around me. Regardless of their race, white, asian or spanish, those three words always seem to get uttered.
Although I often let it roll off my back when people say this, It still annoys me a great deal. Their reasoning for this statement is often because of the way I talk. Evidently I don't speak "black" enough for these people, although I'm not sure what speaking "black" means. Sometimes it's because I dress a certain way or act in a way that's not "black". Whatever their reasoning behind the statement makes no difference to me. I know that I am black. When people first see me they don't hear the way I speak all they see is the color of my skin and begin to make assumptions like; He's black so he must talk and act like this....
I'm not really sure where I'm going with this blog. I suppose I'm just venting. I guess what I'm trying to say; The "YOU'RE NOT BLACK" joke is not funny to me. While I may smile and slightly laugh on the outside. I really want to punch you in the face and say "SHUT THE F@CK UP", well not really but you get the point. I've heard all the jokes a million times by a million different people. What does it mean to be "black" beyond the color of ones skin?
